Beitbridge is Zimbabwe's busiest port of entry and the gateway for most vehicle imports. Whether a vehicle arrives driven or on a car carrier, the clearance logic is the same: declare it, prove its value and origin, settle the duty, and collect the papers that let it be registered locally. Do that before the vehicle reaches the border and the crossing becomes a formality instead of a stall.

The process
Step 1
ZIMRA requires privately imported vehicles driven or carried into Zimbabwe to be pre-cleared before arrival. Import documents are lodged online, duty is assessed and paid, and clearance details are sent to the carrier before the vehicle is loaded for despatch.
Step 2
At the border you pass through the gatehouse, immigration and the ZIMRA counters. Private imports are declared on Form 47; commercial goods move on a Bill of Entry (Form 21) lodged through the ASYCUDA World system.
Step 3
Duty is calculated on the CIF value of the vehicle — cost, insurance and freight up to the point of entry into Zimbabwe. ZIMRA can re-assess declared values on used vehicles, so accurate paperwork matters.
Step 4
After any physical inspection a release order is issued and the clearance certificate is generated from the system. With those papers the vehicle can be registered at the Central Vehicle Registry.

Vehicles also need their engine number, chassis number, make, model and year of manufacture captured on the declaration — that is what allows the customs clearance certificate to generate automatically from ZIMRA's system.

Age limit
Second-hand vehicles aged ten years or more from the date of manufacture may not be imported into Zimbabwe. Check the year of manufacture before you buy abroad — it is one of the most common and costly mistakes we see.
Business imports
Commercial importations move on a Bill of Entry (Form 21) through ASYCUDA World and need a Business Partner Number activated for customs. Because of the valuation and classification rules, ZIMRA itself recommends using a registered clearing agent.
